What are the mechanical properties and tensile strength of UIC 54 steel rail?
UIC 54 (54E1) steel rail is a high-strength carbon-manganese rail designed for heavy-haul and passenger lines (20–25t axle loads), manufactured to EN 13674-1 or UIC 860 standards. It features an ultimate tensile strength typically between 880–1200 MPa, surface hardness between 260–350 HBW, and excellent fatigue resistance.
Key Mechanical Properties of UIC 54 Rail:
- Tensile Strength (Rₘ): Ranges from 880 MPa to over 1100 MPa depending on grade (e.g., R260, R320, R350HT).
- Surface Hardness: Standard R260 rails have a surface hardness of 260–300 HBW; heat-treated (HT) rails can reach 320–350 HBW or higher to improve wear resistance.
- Yield Strength: Generally ≥ 450 MPa, but typically much higher (> 500 MPa) in hardened rails.
